Episode 10: Aschenbrodel-Walzer Coda

When Fakir sees it, he's thinking of other things:

what he said to Tutu

(When the Raven faces you, strike! You can't guard Mytho with just heartshards!)

and what Mytho said to him.

(Why do you hinder me from regaining my heart, Fakir? I want to get my heart back.

Fakir -- you're trembling. Why?)

But Fakir's looking down as he remembers, so he sees the thing glimmer on the stone stairs leading out from the ballroom. It's a butterfly-wing pendant in rose and gold, and it flickers, as Fakir watches, into a plain red stone on a simple chain.

"Is that--"

It is. It's the necklace Tutu always wears. Fakir bends to pick it up and slips it into his pocket.

Princess Tutu, whoever she is, must be hunting for that necklace. Fakir decides to go to the school building early in the morning, carrying the pendant loosely in his hand. There ought to be some girl from the ballet division lurking around here and watching for it. If she tries to take the pendant, then Fakir will finally learn who Princess Tutu is!

It would be a clever plan, except that no one's here but one sleeping duck.

Fakir gets down on one knee. "Hey," he says to the duck, very gently. "Hey."

Duck peers over her shoulder, sleepily - and then practically flails herself into a heart attack, as she realizes that a.) she fell asleep and b.) Fakir is looming over her! Looking giant! And Fakir-ish!

Fakir's lips soften, not quite into a smile, but at least into a relaxed curve. "You're that duck from the other day, aren't you?"

If this duck isn't the same as the other duck, the two birds certainly look very much alike. Besides, they have similar tendencies to flail around in confused circles.

When Fakir leans forward to look more closely at the duck, his hand, and the pendant he holds, come within a few centimeters of the duck's mouth.

What is Fakir doing with her pendant? He doesn't even wear jewelry!

The pendant's right there; maybe if she gives a might tug with her beak, Fakir will let it go -

Fakir closes his fingers around the chain, so the duck can't pull it away.

"What is it?" he says, drily mocking the duck. (It's not quite as pointed as his usual standard of mockery, though.) "Have you taken a liking to this?"

It is shiny. Sometimes birds like shiny things.

The duck blinks at him for a moment, and then gives another tremendous yank.

All the duck wants is a pretty necklace. Watching it tug at the chain, Fakir actually does smile. It even reaches his eyes.

To be a bird, wanting nothing in the world but bread and shiny things--

"I do envy your innocence," he says.

. . . what? Her innocence?

Duck is so startled by this comment - or maybe it's the smile? - that she drops the chain of the necklace and flushes, without really knowing why.

Fakir pets the little duck's head for a moment.

It's warm, he thinks, with some surprise, and soft.

(Fakir touches other dancers, when he must. He gripped Mytho tightly in the ballroom yesterday; but he had a splinter of glass in his hand, then, and needed to be close enough to reach Mytho's heart.

It's been a very long time since he touched anyone or anything tenderly.)

Then Fakir gets to his feet in one quick, smooth motion, turns and walks off. Princess Tutu is probably lurking somewhere else, and it's not time for class yet.

The warmth of Fakir's hand lifts off her head.

Duck stares after him in shock for a moment, and then jumps up with a tremendous flailing quack! and scurries after him towards the school building.

First carrying her around, then feeding her breadcrumbs, now petting her head like he's nice or something - all this kindness from Fakir is VERY CONFUSING and needs to stop RIGHT NOW!
